Human activity on the hill dates back more than 4,000 years, and the site contains the remains of an Iron Age hillfort, later defensive earthworks, a medieval motte-and-bailey castle and the site of a deserted medieval settlement. The most prominent structure today is Victoria Tower, a Grade II listed landmark completed in 1899 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The site is managed by Kirklees Council Parks & Green Spaces and is also designated as a Local Nature Reserve. Its combination of archaeology, open landscape, panoramic views and heritage significance makes it suitable for selected outdoor events, heritage activities, guided walks, educational programmes, community activities and photography. Kirklees currently publishes events including Victoria Tower opening dates and organised activities on Castle Hill.
