Temple Newsam is one of Leeds' most significant historic estates and combines a Grade I-listed Tudor-Jacobean mansion, approximately 1,500 acres of landscaped gardens, woodland and parkland, a working rare-breed farm and extensive outdoor spaces. The house dates from the 1500s and is associated with Lord Darnley, husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. Its interiors contain important collections of decorative arts, giving private and corporate events an unusually historic setting. As an events venue, Temple Newsam offers three principal indoor rooms: the Great Hall, Dining Room and Picture Gallery. The Great Hall can accommodate up to 100 guests, while the Dining Room provides a more intimate setting for up to 40 ceremony guests or 30 seated for dining. The Picture Gallery, introduced as a wedding venue from 2024, can accommodate celebrations of up to 150 guests. Our venue also provides exclusive access to the South Terrace, central courtyard and grand entrance for wedding bookings. Beyond the house, the estate can accommodate large-scale outdoor activities including live music concerts, charity fundraisers and sporting events.
The Great Hall is the principal traditional event room at Temple Newsam and has historical associations with feasting and celebrations. It can accommodate up to 100 guests for ceremonies and wedding breakfasts. The room connects directly with the central courtyard and provides access towards the South Terrace, creating a natural flow between indoor and outdoor reception areas.
The Dining Room is Temple Newsam's most intimate formal event room. It is oak-panelled and features a historic heraldic overmantel associated with Mary, Queen of Scots. The official wedding brochure states that it can accommodate up to 40 guests for a ceremony or 30 seated for dining, making it particularly appropriate for smaller celebrations.
The Picture Gallery is the most visually distinctive of Temple Newsam's event spaces. It features an elaborate Rococo interior and an extensive display of paintings and decorative details. It became available for weddings from 2024 and is promoted as the venue's largest indoor wedding space, accommodating up to 150 guests
The South Terrace provides an outdoor extension to the house with views over the surrounding parkland and gardens. Wedding bookings include exclusive use of the terrace, making it particularly useful for drinks receptions, photography and outdoor guest interaction. Temple Newsam also uses the terrace for seasonal hospitality events such as afternoon and cream teas.
The central courtyard forms an important arrival and circulation space within Temple Newsam House. Wedding information confirms that couples and guests receive access to the courtyard and grand entrance, while the Great Hall connects directly from the courtyard. It provides an attractive transitional setting for photographs, guest arrival and event movement.
