Northern Monk Refectory Leeds is an independent brewery, taproom and events destination located in The Old Flax Store, a Grade II listed former mill in Holbeck, Leeds. The building forms part of the historic Marshall Mills complex and was Northern Monk's original brewery site. The Refectory occupies the brewery/taproom areas, while The Chapter Hall occupies the floor above and is the venue's principal dedicated private-event space. The Chapter Hall is an industrial-style blank-canvas venue retaining the building's original character, including exposed brickwork, original flooring, iron columns and beams. Northern Monk markets it for conferences, meetings, away days, private parties, weddings, fashion shows, film screenings and other events. The space can be configured according to the event and is supported by a dedicated events team. The current official capacity is up to 100 seated or 200 standing. The Chapter Hall is equipped with a PA system, two microphones and a ceiling-mounted projector. Northern Monk can provide a staffed bar, teas and coffees, room-only hire and catering, while external caterers can also be used. The building's location provides good public-transport access, although its listed status means there is no lift.
The Chapter Hall is a Grade II listed industrial event space above Northern Monk's original brewery. Exposed brickwork, iron columns, original flooring and large windows create an authentic industrial setting. Its blank-canvas layout allows weddings, conferences, meetings, parties, screenings and private functions to be configured around individual event requirements.
The first-floor main taproom is a bright, open-plan space with large windows and communal benches. Sitting directly above the original brewery, it houses 20 fresh beer lines and the main food kitchen. It is ideal for casual community events, weekly pub quizzes, and vibrant tap takeovers.
The large, sun-drenched outdoor beer garden sits directly in front of the historic Grade II listed mill facade. Lined with lush, pollinator-friendly plants and extensive wooden booth seating, it acts as a premier summer event space for live local DJ sets, food pop-ups, and open-air festivals.
