Stephen Joseph Theatre

In the centre of Scarborough, we offer an event setting with a character unlike a conventional conference centre or hotel. Stephen Joseph Theatre occupies a beautifully restored former 1930s Odeon cinema on Westborough and is closely associated with the theatre-in-the-round tradition pioneered in Scarborough. Today, we combine independent theatre and cinema with a flexible venue-hire service for professional and private occasions. Our principal performance space, The Round, seats 404 in its traditional theatre-in-the-round arrangement. Its adaptable design can also be changed to a thrust configuration for approximately 237 guests or an end-on arrangement for around 160. The McCarthy provides a fixed end-on auditorium for 165 and is also used for film screenings and live-streaming events. We welcome a wide variety of bookings, including weddings, conferences, workshops, meetings, presentations, staff training and private cinema screenings. For smaller gatherings, we also have a dedicated meeting room that can be used without hiring a theatre auditorium. Our on-site restaurant and bars provide convenient hospitality for delegates and guests, allowing events to combine professional facilities with food, drinks and entertainment. Whether you are organising a conference, presentation, wedding, training session or private screening, Stephen Joseph Theatre gives you the opportunity to host your event within one of Scarborough's most distinctive cultural spaces.
