J.G. Graves Woodland Discovery Centre is a purpose-built woodland venue situated within Ecclesall Woods, one of Sheffield's most important ancient woodland landscapes. Located on Abbey Lane, the centre provides an unusual combination of indoor event rooms, outdoor space and immediate access to woodland trails. Sheffield City Council describes it as a bespoke indoor and outdoor facility suitable for a broad spectrum of events, while the Centre also functions as an access point and visitor facility for Ecclesall Woods. The venue is particularly suited to organisations and individuals looking for a natural, relaxed setting rather than a conventional hotel or conference centre. Its documented uses include meetings, workshops, craft courses, public events, family activities, social hire and weddings. Wedding ceremonies and receptions can be held in the Sycamore Suite, while the surrounding grounds provide opportunities for photographs and outdoor activities. The principal indoor hire areas are the Sycamore Suite and Hector's House. The Sycamore Suite is an airy timber-clad room with a private patio and woodland views, while Hector's House is a smaller timber-framed building with a log-burning stove. Visitors can also use the Woodland Coffee Stop, which provides hot and cold drinks, snacks and light lunches, with outdoor and sheltered seating.
The Sycamore Suite is the larger of the two principal indoor hire spaces. It is an airy, timber-clad room with a private patio and views into Ecclesall Woods. The room is suitable for meetings, workshops, wakes, social functions and wedding ceremonies, with access to the surrounding woodland grounds.
Hector's House is a smaller timber-framed event building next to the main Woodland Discovery Centre. It has a cosy character and is kept warm by a log-burning stove. The room is appropriate for small meetings, workshops, social gatherings and wakes, with toilets located across the courtyard.
The grounds surrounding the Discovery Centre provide an attractive outdoor environment for approved activities, photographs, woodland events and nature-based programmes. The venue's hire documentation specifically recognises outdoor spaces and evening bookings. Capacity depends on the precise area, event type, layout, safety arrangements and approval by Sheffield City Council.
