The Great Hall, University of Malawi

The Great Hall is the flagship multi-purpose events venue at the University of Malawi in Zomba. Located within the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts, this distinctive octagonal building is one of the country's most recognizable academic and cultural landmarks. Designed as a flexible venue, the hall hosts a wide range of activities including graduation ceremonies, international conferences, public lectures, theatrical productions, concerts, exhibitions, examinations, weddings, gala dinners, and community events. Its architectural design allows the interior to be reconfigured for different event formats through movable seating, rostrums, a drop-down whiteboard, and a long performance stage. The venue's excellent acoustics and lighting make it especially suitable for music concerts, drama performances, and cultural productions. Behind the main stage are wings that connect to a piano room and the University's Little Theatre, allowing organisers to host multiple artistic activities simultaneously. The upper floor accommodates offices for academic staff and administrative functions, reflecting the building's dual role as both an educational and events facility.
