Sandal Castle is one of Wakefield's most prominent historic landmarks and an atmospheric outdoor heritage venue overlooking the River Calder. The surviving remains date principally from the medieval period, with the site retaining substantial elements of its stone castle, motte, bailey and surrounding earthworks. The castle is particularly associated with the Battle of Wakefield in 1460 during the Wars of the Roses, when Richard, Duke of York, was killed. Rather than functioning as a conventional conference or wedding centre, Sandal Castle offers an open-air historic setting for heritage activities, guided tours, community events, educational visits, photography and selected organised events. The castle grounds provide panoramic views across Wakefield and the Calder Valley, with the central bailey and surrounding pathways providing the principal usable outdoor areas. The site is open to the public free of charge and has a small free car park. A family-run Castle Café operates on the site, providing food and refreshments and serving as the principal visitor facility.
The castle bailey is the principal open central area within the surviving earthworks. It consists largely of mown grass and provides the most obvious outdoor gathering area at the site. It can support organised heritage activities, community events, educational activities, photography and other appropriately authorised outdoor uses.
The Castle Café is an independently operated family-run café located at the Sandal Castle site. It provides breakfasts, lunches, cakes and refreshments and is the principal food-and-drink facility associated with the castle. It also provides toilets for customers when open.
