Pontefract Castle

Pontefract Castle is one of Yorkshire's most important historic landmarks and is now managed by Wakefield Museums & Castles. The medieval fortress dates from around 1086 and played an important role in English royal and military history, including during the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War. Today, the surviving ruins and surrounding open grounds provide an unusual setting for cultural, commercial and private events. The venue differs considerably from conventional conference centres because its primary event asset is the castle grounds rather than a collection of purpose-built indoor function rooms. The large Bailey provides an open grassed area that can be configured for festivals, performances, markets, outdoor entertainment, community events and private functions. The official venue-hire information confirms that the grounds can be hired for commercial events and private functions. A seasonal stretch tent is also available for hire, providing covered event space. The tent can be hired by the hour for private functions, while the wider castle grounds can be hired after public closing times until 10pm. Furniture and decorations for private tent hire must be arranged separately by the hirer. The site also provides a Visitor Centre containing The Keep Café, Activity Zone and Gift Shop, with level access throughout the building. Most of the castle site is wheelchair accessible, although some historic areas have restrictions.
