The Bootham School

Bootham School is a historic independent Quaker school situated on Bootham, immediately outside York's historic city centre. The school occupies a substantial urban campus with views towards York Minster and combines historic buildings with modern educational, sporting and performing-arts facilities. It is therefore more accurately regarded as a multi-purpose event and residential campus than as a single event room. The most significant event facility is the school's Assembly Hall, a notable 1960s building designed by architect Trevor Dannatt. Historic England records a main hall accommodating 340 people, together with fixed gallery seating for a further 140, giving a total published seating capacity of approximately 480. The hall includes a stage, dressing rooms and a flexible forestage/orchestra-pit arrangement, allowing it to operate as a meeting hall, theatre, concert venue and place of worship. The wider campus also contains an indoor sports hall, heated indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, grass football pitches, volleyball facilities, dance and drama facilities and outdoor sports areas. The school has accommodation facilities, including single and multi-bedded rooms, making the campus suitable for residential programmes and activity-based groups.
