York Castle Museum is one of York's most distinctive heritage venues, occupying former prison buildings beside the historic Eye of York. The museum comprises the former Debtors' Prison and Female Prison, both Grade I listed buildings, and presents extensive collections illustrating everyday life and social history. Its most recognisable feature is Kirkgate, a recreated Victorian street with historic-style shopfronts and period atmosphere. For private and corporate events, Kirkgate provides a highly unusual setting in which guests can dine or socialise among recreated Victorian streetscapes. York Venues states that the space can host seated banquets for up to 70 guests, while larger buffet receptions can accommodate up to 120 guests. Current venue information additionally lists a 92-person theatre-style capacity. The venue can arrange food, drinks, music and entertainment, with technical facilities including handheld, lapel and lectern microphones. The current event listing also identifies Wi-Fi, a PA system, natural light and a wedding licence. York Castle Museum is therefore best suited to small-to-medium weddings, private dinners, receptions, corporate functions, themed parties and cultural events where atmosphere and heritage are more important than conventional conference-room facilities.
