Locomotion

Locomotion is a national railway museum located in Shildon, County Durham, and forms part of the Science Museum Group alongside the National Railway Museum in York. The museum celebrates Shildon's pioneering role in railway history and contains an extensive collection of historic railway vehicles, engineering objects and related material. Shildon is widely recognised as an important location in the development of the modern railway, making Locomotion an especially distinctive heritage venue. Beyond its museum function, Locomotion offers a highly unusual setting for corporate and private events. The venue can accommodate large-scale functions within its exhibition and event spaces, allowing delegates and guests to experience historic locomotives and railway engineering alongside their event programme. The Great Hall provides the principal large-scale event environment and can accommodate events of up to approximately 1,000 people. The venue is particularly appropriate for conferences, exhibitions, networking events, corporate hospitality, gala dinners, product launches, receptions and company away days. Its large open spaces also provide opportunities for staging, branding, displays and experiential activities. Locomotion combines event infrastructure with a strong heritage identity. This makes it particularly attractive to organisations seeking an event venue that offers something beyond a standard hotel ballroom or conference centre. The museum's collections can form part of the event experience, creating opportunities for themed receptions, private tours and bespoke corporate programmes.
