Tynemouth Priory and Castle is an extraordinary heritage setting on a dramatic headland overlooking the North Sea and the entrance to the River Tyne. Our site brings together the remains of a medieval priory, a powerful 14th-century gatehouse, historic castle defences and underground gun batteries, creating a distinctive backdrop for visitors, educational groups and cultural events. We preserve centuries of history while welcoming organised groups to explore the site and our interactive Life in the Stronghold exhibition. Our grounds include expansive grassed areas, picnic facilities, gardens and spectacular coastal views, while accessible facilities help visitors enjoy much of the site comfortably. We also provide opportunities for commercial photography and professional filming, subject to prior permission. Our programme can include heritage, cultural, food and motoring events, alongside school and group visits. With its combination of historic architecture, open grounds and coastal scenery, we provide a memorable setting for experiences connected with North East England’s remarkable history and landscape.
