Souter Lighthouse and The Leas

We are Souter Lighthouse and The Leas, a historic coastal attraction overlooking the rugged North East coastline at Whitburn. Our iconic lighthouse opened in 1871 and was the first lighthouse in the UK designed and built to be powered by electricity. We sit within a nature-rich landscape of clifftop grasslands and coastal park, providing visitors with opportunities to explore our heritage, enjoy coastal views and experience our surrounding natural environment. Our site includes the historic lighthouse, lighthouse café, second-hand bookshop and areas connected with the lives and work of lighthouse keepers. We also host a varied programme of events throughout the year, including guided walks, family activities, seasonal workshops, heritage events, community activities and wellbeing sessions. Our wider grounds provide space for outdoor activities and family experiences, while the Whitburn Coastal Conservation Centre supports selected activities and events. We offer an engaging destination where heritage, nature, learning and community activities come together beside the coast.
