We are the Great Barn at Gawthorpe Hall, a remarkable Grade I listed historic building in Padiham, Lancashire. Built in 1605, our 100-foot-long aisled barn has stood for more than four centuries and has had many uses throughout its history, from agricultural storage to an indoor training area and, more recently, an arts and exhibition space. After being closed to the public since 2008, we have now entered a new chapter following a major roof restoration project by the National Trust. We are being brought back into use as a multi-purpose space for visitors, community activities, events and functions. We sit within the wider Gawthorpe Hall estate, surrounded by historic grounds, woodland and a hidden Walled Garden. Our character, scale and historic structure give us a distinctive setting for functions and events, while our adjoining Coach House and nearby facilities support the wider visitor experience. Our cobbled courtyard sits outside the Great Barn and forms part of the wider visitor setting. It provides the approach to the barn and connects this historic building with the surrounding estate facilities.
Our wider estate includes more than 40 acres of woodland, formal gardens and a hidden Walled Garden. These outdoor areas surround the historic buildings and provide visitors with opportunities to explore the landscape around the Great Barn.
