Sunderland Minster is the historic minster church of Sunderland, located on High Street West in the city centre. Officially the Minster Church of St Michael and All Angels and St Benedict Biscop, it is a Grade II* listed building and an important religious, civic and architectural landmark. The building has a long history associated with Bishopwearmouth and became known as Sunderland Minster following the city's designation in 1992. The Minster continues to operate primarily as a place of Christian worship while also serving as a community and cultural venue. Its historic interior provides a distinctive setting for music, performances, talks, exhibitions, heritage activities and community programmes. The building's architectural character makes it particularly attractive for events where atmosphere and heritage are important. Unlike dedicated commercial event centres such as conference hotels or racecourses, Sunderland Minster does not currently publish a detailed room-hire or capacity schedule. Event suitability and capacity therefore need to be confirmed with the Minster Office on an individual basis. Its central Sunderland location makes it relatively accessible for visitors attending city-centre events, with public transport and commercial parking available nearby. The building is also suitable for photography and filming where permission is obtained.

The grand interior layout features soaring stone pillars, extensive wooden pews, and open, elevated performance staging perfect for major community gatherings and choral concerts.

The chapel space offers a quiet, contemplative atmosphere detached from the large nave. It centers around a beautifully lit altar setting, intricate woodwork panels, and smaller targeted stained glass installations like the historic Bede window detail.

The cafe features a warm, inviting dining space with polished wooden tables and chairs set directly against the church’s spectacular historic stonework and high timber paneling. It is highly regarded by locals for serving affordable bites, classic comfort foods, cooked breakfasts, and sweet treats like school cake.

The Minster sits beautifully on Minster Green in the city centre. Its distinct 20th-century stone tower stands as a historic anchor amidst modern city developments.
