Barley Hall

@8is5ac

Barley Hall is a beautifully restored medieval townhouse located in the heart of York, accessed through the historic Coffee Yard from Stonegate. The oldest parts of the building date from around 1360, when it was constructed as a York townhouse of Nostell Priory. Around 1430, a new wing was added, and the property later became associated with William Snawsell, a prominent York citizen, goldsmith, alderman and Lord Mayor. The building was hidden beneath a later façade until the 1980s, when archaeological investigation revealed the medieval structure. York Archaeological Trust subsequently purchased the property in 1987 and restored it, reopening Barley Hall to the public in 1993. Today, Barley Hall provides an immersive heritage experience centred on its magnificent Great Hall, exposed timber framing, high ceilings and recreated medieval interiors. It also hosts specialist events, group visits, educational activities, immersive theatre and medieval-themed experiences. Its current programme includes medieval feasts and evening events, demonstrating that the building can function beyond normal museum opening hours for programmed events.
