Durham Town Hall

@crwen0

Durham Town Hall is one of Durham City's most distinctive historic event venues, located directly on Market Place. The complex has been at the heart of Durham's civic life for almost seven centuries, with the Guildhall dating from the medieval period and the later Town Hall/Great Hall forming part of the Victorian redevelopment. Today, the building continues to accommodate civic functions while also operating as a heritage attraction and event venue. The venue combines historic architecture with facilities suitable for contemporary events. Its most prominent space is the Great Hall/Main Hall, a Neo-Gothic room with a dramatic hammer-beam oak roof, historic panelling, stained glass and civic artwork. The adjoining Lantern Room provides a smaller reception and bar area, while the Burlison Gallery can be used for smaller talks and workshops. The historic Guildhall is another important space within the complex and remains the home of Durham's Freemen and Trade Guilds. The Town Hall has hosted conferences, careers fairs, talks, workshops, cultural events, concerts, ceilidhs, civic ceremonies and private functions. Recent examples include events using the Great Hall and Lantern Room together. A major restoration programme completed substantial conservation work to the Great Hall, Guildhall, Crush Hall and Lantern Room, including structural repairs, restoration of historic finishes and installation of a new public lift.
