York Theatre Royal is a historic city-centre theatre and cultural venue located on St. Leonard's Place, close to York Minster. We date our history to 1744 and occupy a listed building incorporating Medieval, Georgian, Victorian and modern architecture. We are primarily a producing and receiving theatre, but our facilities are also available for private and corporate hire. We specifically promote our Main House auditorium and Studio Theatre for conferences, launches, weddings and other events. The Main House is our principal large-capacity space, with current organisational documents describing it as approximately 760–761 seats. The Studio Theatre is a much smaller and more flexible performance space, currently described by us as approximately 70 seats. Our building also contains a substantial front-of-house area, café, bars and seating areas, making us suitable for receptions, refreshments and networking alongside events in the auditoria. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the foyer. Accessibility is a significant feature, with level entrances, automatic doors, lifts to the Main House and Studio, accessible toilets and wheelchair spaces. We are particularly appropriate for conferences requiring a theatre-style presentation environment, product launches, talks, performances, award events, screenings and cultural programmes. Our central York location, historic character and professional theatre infrastructure make us a strong option for events requiring a distinctive auditorium rather than a conventional hotel conference room.
The Main House is York Theatre Royal's principal auditorium and largest event space. With approximately 760 seats, it provides a professional theatre environment for conferences, launches, talks, performances and presentations. The auditorium includes Stalls and Dress Circle seating and has wheelchair spaces, lift access and accessible facilities.
The Studio Theatre is York Theatre Royal's smaller and more flexible performance space. It is designed for smaller productions, talks, workshops and events requiring a more intimate environment than the Main House. The theatre also makes the Studio available for external hire alongside the Main House.
The De Grey Ballroom is an elegant, historic hall featuring high ceilings, striking period architecture, and its own dedicated cocktail bar. Hosting up to 180 standing guests, this sophisticated room is highly favored for private wedding receptions, corporate dinners, upscale parties, and networking events right in central York.
