Hartlepool Borough Hall is a historic events and community venue situated in the heart of Hartlepool's Headland, only a short distance from the coast. Built in 1865, the building has undergone several changes of use, originally serving as a market hall before becoming a council chamber and later developing into an entertainment, events and wedding venue. Its historic character and coastal Headland setting give it a distinctive identity compared with purpose-built conference venues. The venue's principal facility is its large main auditorium, which has historically accommodated up to 1,200 people and has hosted festivals, exhibitions, shows, community celebrations, conferences, award ceremonies, sporting events and other large gatherings. The hall includes a stage and balcony, while additional rooms provide facilities for smaller meetings, functions and ceremonies. Hartlepool Borough Hall is also licensed for weddings and civil ceremonies. The Middlegate Room serves as the register office's principal ceremony room and has seating for up to 34 guests, with large windows overlooking Hartlepool Bay. The Croft Suite and other rooms provide additional options for receptions and smaller functions. The venue has a Constables Bar, kitchen, accessible toilets and lift access, allowing it to support both public and private events. Its spaces have historically been used for the Hartlepool Horticultural Show, Heritage Festival, Beer Festival, Christmas parties, conferences, exhibitions, boxing and snooker tournaments, weddings and community celebrations.
The Main Auditorium is the Borough Hall's principal large-scale event space, featuring a substantial hall, stage and balcony. Historically capable of accommodating up to 1,200 guests, it has been used for festivals, exhibitions, conferences, performances, community celebrations and sporting events. It provides the venue's largest event capacity.
The Middlegate Room is located on the first floor and serves as Hartlepool Register Office's main ceremony room. Large windows provide views across Hartlepool Bay, while lift access makes the room accessible from the atrium. It is particularly suited to civil wedding ceremonies and intimate formal occasions.
The Mayor's Parlour and Mayor's Chamber occupy the first-floor South-East wing of the historic building. Together, the area has historically provided capacity for around 100 people and offers a more formal setting than the main hall. It can be appropriate for civic functions, receptions, meetings and smaller formal gatherings.
The Croft Suite is a smaller function and meeting space within the Borough Hall, providing an alternative to the large auditorium. It is suitable for meetings, smaller receptions, wedding-related functions and community activities. The room remains operational while the main auditorium is closed and forms part of the building's continuing hire facilities.
The Sandwellgate Room is a dedicated meeting room within the Borough Hall. It provides a smaller-scale alternative to the main auditorium and is intended primarily for meetings and functions. Its more intimate scale makes it appropriate for business meetings, community groups, workshops and other activities that do not require the capacity of the main hall.
Constables Bar is the Borough Hall's dedicated bar facility, with access from the main street and the ability to connect with the main auditorium during events. It provides a social and refreshment area for functions and performances. The venue also has a kitchen and additional temporary bar facilities for larger events.
