Barley Hall

@owglzj

Barley Hall is a beautifully restored medieval townhouse situated in Coffee Yard, just off York's historic Stonegate. The building is a Grade II-listed timber-framed property with origins extending back to the thirteenth century and a substantial fifteenth-century hall. It was restored and partly reconstructed in the late twentieth century, creating an immersive heritage attraction that recreates aspects of medieval domestic life. Today Barley Hall is operated by York Archaeology and is principally a visitor attraction, while also providing opportunities for group visits, programmed events, immersive theatre, talks and selected private functions. The building's most significant event environment is the Great Hall, a large medieval-style timber-framed room with exposed structural timbers and high ceilings. Historic venue-hire information records private events for up to 50 guests. The Steward's Room provides an additional smaller space, while the courtyard and other historic areas can contribute to the visitor and event experience. Barley Hall is particularly suited to intimate heritage events, receptions, talks, private functions, small celebrations, filming and cultural activities rather than large conferences. Because of its historic construction, access is more restricted than at modern venues: there are steps and raised thresholds throughout the building, there is no lift, and only selected areas are accessible via a temporary ramp. The venue is approximately 0.8 km from York railway station and is located in the pedestrian-oriented historic centre.
