Newburgh Priory is a historic country house and estate at Coxwold, near York, on the edge of the Howardian Hills. The site originated as an Augustinian priory founded in 1145, while the present house developed after the Dissolution and subsequent alterations. The property remains the home of the Wombwell family and combines historic interiors with extensive gardens, parkland and outdoor event settings. The estate offers exclusive-use weddings and events, with three magnificent Georgian rooms licensed for civil ceremonies. The house can accommodate intimate ceremonies of around 20 guests through to approximately 100 guests, while the atmospheric Long Gallery Ruin can accommodate ceremonies of up to 300. For dinner and dancing, the venue offers several marquee locations, including the Long Gallery Ruin and Ancient Lawn, allowing considerably larger celebrations. The grounds are one of Newburgh Priory's strongest features, incorporating a water garden, handcrafted topiary, walled garden, woodland walks, lake and extensive parkland with views towards the White Horse of Kilburn. The house and grounds provide numerous photography and outdoor reception opportunities. Newburgh Priory does not provide accommodation on site, but several accommodation providers are located in nearby Coxwold, including Newburgh House, which stands close to the Priory gates.
Newburgh Priory has three Georgian rooms licensed for civil ceremonies. They provide elegant indoor settings for intimate ceremonies, drinks and canapés. The rooms retain the historic character of the country house and are particularly appropriate for smaller weddings where guests want the atmosphere of a private stately home rather than a conventional function centre.
This atmospheric, roofless stone ruin beautifully blends indoor heritage with open skies. Its rose-clad, ivy-draped walls create a breathtaking backdrop, making it an ideal choice for large, romantic wedding ceremonies or open-air drinks receptions.
The Ancient Lawn is a large open area overlooking the surrounding parkland and Newburgh Priory itself. It provides one of the estate's principal marquee locations and can accommodate larger weddings and events. The setting combines expansive lawns with views of the historic house, creating a strong backdrop for outdoor celebrations.
