Lowther Castle & Gardens gives a remarkable setting where history, architecture, gardens and the landscape of the Lake District come together. We welcome visitors to a historic castle site surrounded by 130 acres of evolving gardens, woodland and open landscapes. Lowther Castle itself is one of the most distinctive features of our estate, with dramatic ruins that tell the story of a remarkable past. Our gardens include the Parterre, Garden-in-the-Ruins, Rose Garden, Edwardian gardens, woodland areas, summerhouses and the Western Terrace, which provides views across the Lowther Valley and towards the Lake District mountains. We also offer a café, takeaway facilities, toilets, parking and the Lost Castle adventure playground. Throughout the year, we host and participate in a programme of experiences and seasonal events, from outdoor theatre and Christmas events to guided tours and our Lights of Lowther winter trail. We aim to give every visitor a memorable experience in a truly historic setting.
Lowther Castle is the dramatic centrepiece of our estate. We offer a distinctive historic setting surrounded by our gardens, with the surviving Gothic ruins providing a memorable backdrop and a strong sense of place for organised experiences and seasonal events.
Our Rose Garden is inspired by the Sleeping Beauty story and is planted in the shape of an old English rose. We have designed this garden as a sensory experience, giving visitors a particularly distinctive part of the Lowther landscape.
Our Courtyard forms an important visitor area at Lowther Castle & Gardens. We have our main café and takeaway facilities here, together with visitor toilets, making it a practical part of the estate for visitors and organised group experiences.
