Sunderland Empire is one of the North East's most prominent historic theatres and has been operating from its High Street West location since 1907. The Grade II* listed building retains its ornate four-tier auditorium, comprising the Stalls, Dress Circle, Upper Circle and Gallery, making it particularly distinctive for theatre productions, concerts, comedy, dance, opera, musicals and family entertainment. The theatre is operated by Ambassador Theatre Group and is primarily designed for large-scale live entertainment. Its current programme includes touring productions, comedy, music, family shows and other performances. The auditorium contains approximately 1,860 seats, while current venue information refers to a capacity of around 2,000. For corporate clients, Sunderland Empire offers corporate entertaining and venue-hire packages, including bespoke hospitality, private pre-show reception spaces and meeting/event opportunities in its front-of-house areas. ATG specifically promotes the venue as an option for taking corporate meetings and events "to another level" within its historic setting. The venue also has three bars, the Ambassador Lounge, an in-house Pizza al Teatro operation and the 1907 Suite, which can be booked as a private lounge for selected performances. Its central location is another advantage: Sunderland railway station is less than 10 minutes' walk away, with several city-centre car parks nearby.
The Main Auditorium is Sunderland Empire's principal performance space, featuring a spectacular four-tier configuration of Stalls, Dress Circle, Upper Circle and Gallery. Its large stage and historic interior make it suitable for major theatre productions, concerts, comedy, dance, opera and large-scale entertainment. It is not four separate rooms.
The Ambassador Lounge is a premium front-of-house hospitality area offering pre-show and interval table service. It can be reserved as part of selected theatre experiences and provides a more private environment for drinks and hospitality. ATG also promotes private reception opportunities as part of its corporate entertaining packages.
The 1907 Suite is a private lounge within Sunderland Empire available to book at selected performances. Named after the theatre's opening year, it provides a more exclusive environment for hospitality before performances. It is currently described by ATG as an additional private lounge rather than a conventional conference room.
Sunderland Empire contains private viewing boxes integrated into its historic auditorium. There are four private boxes at Dress Circle level and two proscenium boxes at Upper Circle level.
