Keel Square

Keel Square is a prominent outdoor public space in the heart of Sunderland city centre and forms part of the city's developing cultural quarter. Completed in 2015, the square was designed around Sunderland's maritime and industrial heritage, with public artworks including the Keel Line, which records the names of more than 8,000 ships launched in Sunderland, and Propellers of the City, which commemorates the city's shipbuilding workforce. The square has become an established location for large public events and temporary event installations. Sunderland City Council's current venue pack identifies it as suitable for concerts and day festivals, private or corporate parties, community events with moderate infrastructure, and brand activation/experiential activity. The space measures approximately 3,775.6 m². Keel Square is particularly notable for its city-centre accessibility. Sunderland Metro and railway stations are within walking distance, while nearby multi-storey car parks provide parking. Vehicle access is available through High Street West, and public Wi-Fi is available. Recent events demonstrate the range of uses. In 2026, the square has hosted or is hosting major live-music events, festivals, family entertainment, fan zones and community celebrations, including the In the Square Summer Series.
