Headlam Hall is a historic 17th-century country house hotel situated in the rural hamlet of Headlam in County Durham, between Darlington and Barnard Castle. The independently owned property combines period country-house character with modern hospitality facilities, extensive grounds, a spa, golf course, restaurant, private dining areas and dedicated event spaces. The hotel currently has 38 bedrooms spread between the Main Hall, Coach House, Mews and spa buildings. Headlam Hall caters for corporate meetings, conferences, private dining, celebrations, dinner dances, charity events, society gatherings, car groups and exclusive-use weddings. Its corporate operation can accommodate up to 100 people, while the Coach House Suite itself has a published capacity of up to 120 theatre-style. The Coach House is a self-contained “venue within a venue” across the courtyard from the Main Hall. It contains the principal event area, smaller dining/bar spaces and an upstairs Gallery Room. The hotel provides an in-house PA and lighting system in the Coach House Ballroom for professional DJs and regularly hosts live bands there. Headlam also offers smaller private dining rooms including the Olive Room, Panelled Room and Drawing Room. During 2026, the former Stable Lounge and Coach House Bar are being transformed into the new Paddock Bar and Feed Room, scheduled to reopen in September 2026.
The Coach House is Headlam Hall's principal large event facility and operates as a self-contained venue across the courtyard from the Main Hall. Its principal event area, currently described as the Stable Yard/Coach House Suite, has a glazed roof, natural light and space for dining, dancing and entertainment.
The Gallery Room is located upstairs at one end of the Coach House above the main Stable Yard. It can provide additional space associated with Coach House events and is suitable for supplementary seating or entertainment. The hotel's current conference page does not publish a separate capacity for this room.
The Paddock Bar is the new event and dining space being created from the former Stable Lounge. It will feature exposed stone walls, oak beams, a private bar and glazed doors opening onto a raised/south-facing terrace. The hotel says it will accommodate dining for up to 40 people.
The Feed Room is the new private dining room being created from the former Coach House Bar. It will feature oak panelling, a large dining table for up to 14 people and an open kitchen pass where guests can see food being prepared. It can also support boardroom-style meetings.
The Drawing Room is an elegant Georgian room in the Main Hall overlooking the gardens. It is particularly suited to private lunches, dinners and boardroom-style meetings rather than events requiring dancing or loud entertainment. French doors open towards the terrace and main lawn, providing attractive garden views.
The Panelled Room is a private dining space located next to the main restaurant. It can seat up to 12 guests around one table, while larger groups of up to 18 can be accommodated across two tables. The room is also listed as dog-friendly for suitable private occasions.
The Olive Room is a small private dining room located beside the Orangery Restaurant. It is designed for intimate business meals, family celebrations and private dining rather than large functions. The current hotel information specifies seating for eight to twelve people at one long table.
