Hopetown Darlington is an award-winning railway-themed visitor attraction and multi-purpose events venue located on McNay Street in Darlington. Opened in 2024 following a major redevelopment, the 7.5-acre site brings together historic railway buildings, museums, exhibition areas, outdoor spaces and modern visitor facilities. The attraction celebrates Darlington's important role in the development of passenger railways and incorporates historic buildings including the 1833 Grade II* listed Goods Shed, North Road Station Museum and the Carriage Works.
Beyond being a visitor attraction, Hopetown is designed to host a broad range of private, corporate and community events. Its event offering includes conferences, meetings, training sessions, workshops, awards ceremonies, exhibitions, parties, intimate performances, outdoor festivals and family activities. The venue can accommodate conferences involving more than 250 delegates, while its smaller rooms are suitable for meetings and training sessions.
Facilities include free Wi-Fi, parking, event equipment, food and beverage options, accessible facilities and exclusive/private spaces. Outdoor options include Foundry Green and Goods Yard, while indoor spaces include the Exhibition Hall, Goods Shed, The Stores, Stephenson Room and Pease Room. This combination makes Hopetown particularly distinctive for organisers seeking a heritage setting rather than a conventional conference or function centre.

The Exhibition Hall
£0.00
The Exhibition Hall is located within the historic Carriage Works and is Hopetown's principal indoor large-event space. It is designed for medium-to-large events and can be configured for different layouts. Suitable uses include awards ceremonies, general meetings, exhibitions and TV/studio-style productions. Its historic railway environment provides a distinctive backdrop for corporate and cultural events.
Goods Shed
£0.00
The Grade II* listed Goods Shed dates from 1833 and serves as the gateway to Hopetown. Its café space can be hired exclusively during evenings for group gatherings, intimate gigs and other small-scale events. During daytime hours, it can also support non-exclusive activities such as coffee mornings, making it particularly suited to informal social events.
Goods Yard
£0.00
Goods Yard is an uncovered outdoor event area positioned between two historic railway buildings. It is intended for small-to-medium events and can support outdoor activities, seasonal events and festivals. The space can also accommodate a temporary marquee, making it flexible for organisers who want an outdoor setting while retaining some weather protection.
The Stores
£0.00
The Stores provides an unusual event environment surrounded by part of Hopetown's collection of approximately 30,000 railway heritage objects. It is an intimate space suitable for meetings and workshops. However, unlike some of the other rooms, it is an open public venue, meaning bookings are non-exclusive. This makes it better suited to informal or community-focused activities.
The Stephenson Room
£0.00
The Stephenson Room is a medium-sized private room inside North Road Station Museum. Its railway heritage setting and large wall mural create a distinctive environment for professional gatherings. Hopetown specifically recommends it for work meetings, presentations, training sessions and workshops. Because it is an exclusive space, it offers greater privacy than The Stores.
The Pease Room
£0.00
The Pease Room is a small, intimate and exclusive meeting space within North Road Station Museum. It is particularly appropriate for smaller meetings and training sessions. Hopetown also describes it as useful as a holding room, lunch room or entertainment room when hired alongside a larger event space, making it a useful supporting venue.
Foundry Green
£0.00
Foundry Green is Hopetown's large outdoor green event space. It can accommodate large-scale outdoor activities and can be used either as an open-air venue or with a temporary marquee. The venue specifically identifies live music, entertainment, exercise, dog training and some sports as potential uses. It provides a more flexible outdoor alternative to the indoor spaces.
