Elsecar Heritage Centre is a distinctive heritage and events destination situated within the historic Elsecar Ironworks complex in Elsecar, Barnsley. We preserve an important part of the area's industrial history while functioning today as a visitor attraction containing independent shops, creative businesses, cafés and event facilities. Our historic industrial architecture gives us a very different character from conventional hotels, conference centres and modern exhibition halls. Our principal event facility is The Ironworks, a vast Victorian iron rolling mill that has been transformed into a flexible indoor events venue. We can accommodate up to 900 guests and are suitable for live music, performances, corporate events, conferences, exhibitions, specialist markets, trade shows, weddings and charity events. We offer flexible layouts, bar facilities, staging, tiered seating and a green room. Building 20 provides a smaller alternative with capacity for up to 120 guests. It has separate entrances and facilities and can operate independently or alongside The Ironworks, making it useful for smaller events, meetings, workshops, weddings, VIP functions, production areas and breakout activities. Our wider site also benefits from free on-site parking, cafés, public transport connections and proximity to the M1.
The Ironworks is Elsecar Heritage Centre's flagship event space: a vast Victorian rolling mill providing an atmospheric industrial backdrop for large-scale events. Its open-plan design can be sectioned into different configurations and supports performances, conferences, exhibitions, markets, weddings, corporate functions and trade shows, with staging, bars, tiered seating and production facilities.
Building 20 is Elsecar Heritage Centre's smaller dedicated event space, offering a more intimate alternative to The Ironworks. With separate entrances and facilities, it can operate independently or alongside the main venue. It is suitable for meetings, workshops, weddings, smaller events, VIP functions, production use and breakout activities.
Surrounding the historical workshop buildings, the wide, pedestrianised sandstone courtyards provide an atmospheric open-air arena. Lined by original Victorian architecture and a prominent industrial brick chimney, these outdoor spaces regularly host vibrant open-air artisan markets, street food pop-ups, community festivals, and historic vehicle rallies on busy weekends.
