The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, formerly known as Sage Gateshead, is one of the North East's most recognisable cultural and events venues. Situated on the Gateshead Quayside beside the River Tyne, the distinctive curved building was designed by Foster + Partners and opened in 2004. It combines internationally recognised concert facilities with conference, exhibition, meeting and community spaces.
The building's two principal public performance spaces are Sage One and Sage Two. Sage One is the largest, seating around 1,700 people across three levels, while Sage Two can accommodate up to 600 and provides a distinctive ten-sided performance environment. The Northern Rock Foundation Hall provides an additional rehearsal, performance and events space.
For business events, the venue's large central Concourse acts as a networking, exhibition and hospitality area, while its foyers, meeting rooms and event spaces can support conferences, receptions, exhibitions and corporate functions. Historical conference specifications list a range of smaller spaces including the Barbour Room, Squires Seminar Room and Meeting Pods.
The venue benefits from professional technical production, specialist acoustics, catering, cafés, bars, Wi-Fi, accessible facilities and excellent transport connections. Its riverside architecture and views across the Tyne make it particularly attractive for conferences, awards ceremonies, exhibitions, corporate events, live performances and large-scale cultural programmes.
