The Georgian Theatre Royal is a historic theatre and events venue in the centre of Richmond, North Yorkshire. Originally opened in 1788, it is recognised as Britain's oldest working theatre in its original form and operates as both a functioning playhouse and a living theatre museum. Its historic Georgian architecture gives it a distinctive character that differs substantially from conventional conference centres, hotels and purpose-built event venues.
The venue is available for a broad range of private and professional events, including theatre productions, corporate presentations, award ceremonies, school productions, AGMs, meetings, weddings and private celebrations. Its main auditorium accommodates 155 people, providing an intimate but highly distinctive environment for presentations, performances and ceremonies. The theatre also has modern lighting and sound capabilities, making it suitable for events requiring professional production support.
For weddings, the venue offers a particularly unusual experience: couples can hold their civil marriage or service on the theatre stage, with nineteenth-century scenery and personalised lighting and sound effects available. The theatre has two licensed bars suitable for receptions, while nearby Friary Gardens provides an attractive location for wedding photographs.
The venue combines heritage with modern accessibility and event infrastructure, including Wi-Fi, AV facilities, bars, refreshments, wheelchair spaces, accessible toilets, a lift and infrared hearing equipment.
