Cannon Hall is an elegant Georgian country house museum situated in the village of Cawthorne, approximately five miles west of Barnsley. We stand within around 70 acres of historic parkland and landscaped gardens, providing a distinctive heritage setting for weddings, conferences, private events, group visits and photography. Our history stretches back centuries, with the Spencer and Spencer Stanhope families responsible for much of the house's development from the seventeenth century onwards. Today, we operate as a public museum containing fine and decorative art collections, historic room settings and the De Morgan galleries. Our historic interiors include important rooms such as the Drawing Room, Dining Room, Library and Ballroom, giving event organisers access to an unusually characterful environment. Our events programme includes weddings, conferences, booked guided tours, group visits, filming and photography. Our wedding operation provides three ceremony spaces supported by a dedicated wedding team. Outside, we offer extensive parkland, landscaped gardens, a walled garden and additional outdoor areas. Our grounds have also been recognised through the Green Flag Award.
The Ballroom is one of Cannon Hall's most distinctive historic interiors. The room was added to the house during the late nineteenth century in a Jacobean style and forms an important part of the building's architectural history. Its period character makes it particularly suitable for weddings, ceremonies, receptions, photography and heritage-themed events.
The Drawing Room is one of Cannon Hall's principal historic interiors and retains the decorative character of the Georgian country-house environment. Its proportions and period detailing provide a refined setting for smaller ceremonies, receptions, private gatherings and photography. It is also part of the museum's historic-room presentation.
The Dining Room provides a traditional country-house environment with period furnishings and artwork. Its formal character makes it particularly appropriate for intimate dining, wedding-related activities, private gatherings and heritage events. The room forms part of Cannon Hall's historic interiors and is also represented in the venue's accessibility imagery.
The Library is a historic room created as part of the eighteenth-century expansion of Cannon Hall. It retains the character of a traditional country-house library, including bookcases and historic decorative elements. It provides a quieter, more intimate setting for small gatherings, meetings, photography and heritage-focused activities.
This unique, Grade II listed 19th-century stone structure sits tucked away in the parklands. It features an open-fronted arcade with rustic timber pillars, exposed brickwork, and built-in wooden bench seating. It offers a sheltered, nature-filled woodland backdrop that is highly popular for bohemian or rustic-style wedding ceremonies.
Dating back to the Georgian era, this beautifully restored, tranquil garden is enclosed by historic red brick walls. It is home to a world-famous collection of historic pear trees, vibrant seasonal borders, and antique glasshouses. The space provides a romantic, colorful, and private setting ideal for summer ceremonies or open-air drinks receptions.
