Cooper Gallery is a historic public art gallery located on Church Street in the centre of Barnsley. Opened in 1914, the gallery was established through the generosity of Samuel Joshua Cooper, who intended the building to provide the people of Barnsley with free access to art. Today, it houses a significant collection of British and European paintings, watercolours and drawings dating from the 17th to 21st centuries. The gallery has developed beyond its permanent collection and now hosts temporary exhibitions, cultural events, workshops and educational activities. Its central location makes it accessible for community, cultural and business gatherings, while its historic architecture and art collections provide a distinctive alternative to conventional meeting venues. For event purposes, the Sadler Room is the principal separately identified room available for hire. Barnsley Council's current venue schedule confirms private and commercial hire of the room on a full-day or hourly basis. The wider gallery spaces can also be hired for private functions, with the council listing dedicated gallery-hire packages. The venue also contains the Cooper Gallery Café, a gift shop and outdoor areas. Accessibility facilities include a lift, automatic doors, portable hearing-loop equipment and other visitor-support facilities.
