We are The Horse Hospital, an artist-led, not-for-profit independent arts venue in the heart of Bloomsbury, central London. Our Grade II listed building dates back to 1797, when James Burton originally built it as stabling for sick horses. Today, we provide a distinctive home for experimental and countercultural arts, with a strong focus on DIY cultural practices. Our historic character remains visible through original features including the horse ramp, cobbled floors, cast iron pillars, tethering rings and barred windows. We welcome a wide range of creative practitioners and audiences through our own programme, direct venue hire and Open Access scheme. Our work spans music, performance, film, fashion, visual art, talks, exhibitions and interdisciplinary projects. We can accommodate up to 120 people standing or 65 seated, while providing technical equipment and event support. We aim to preserve our unique character while continuing to provide an accessible platform for independent and experimental cultural activity.
Our main gallery is the principal event space within The Horse Hospital, providing an atmospheric setting for music, performance, film, exhibitions, talks and other creative events. We retain the building's original cobbled character and historic architectural details, creating a distinctive environment for independent and experimental cultural activity. We can accommodate up to 65 people seated or 120 standing.
