Penistone Paramount is a historic cinema, theatre and live-events venue situated on Shrewsbury Road in Penistone, South Yorkshire. Originally constructed as Penistone's Assembly Hall in 1914, the building has provided entertainment for the local community for more than a century. The venue celebrated its 110th anniversary in November 2024. Today, the building remains owned by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, while the business is operated by Penistone Town Council. The Paramount operates as a single-screen cinema with 344 seats, but its facilities extend beyond film screenings. Behind the cinema screen is a large stage used for live entertainment including music, theatre, comedy, pantomime, ballet, choir performances, dance-school productions, tribute acts and community theatre. The auditorium has two principal seating areas: the Stalls, located on the ground floor, and the Circle, located upstairs. There is no lift to the Circle because of the building's historic layout. The Stalls have a separate step-free accessible entrance and six designated wheelchair positions. Facilities include an on-site bar/kiosk, toilets, free adjacent parking and a large performance stage.
The spectacular historic main auditorium features plush red seating for 344 guests and a grand tiered balcony. A fully equipped live performance stage sits right behind the large cinema screen. This dual-purpose space perfectly hosts massive blockbusters, live touring bands, theatrical plays, stand-up comedy clubs, and elegant classical organ concerts.
The cozy Paramount Bar provides a charming, welcoming space for audience members to relax before a show or stretch their legs during the traditional mid-film interval. It is well-stocked with a great selection of hot coffees, soft drinks, draft beers, wines, spirits, and classic cinema treats like fresh popcorn and ice cream.
