The Lamproom Theatre

The Lamproom Theatre is a Grade II listed performing-arts venue on Westgate in Barnsley town centre. We originally opened in 1794 as a Methodist chapel and were subsequently used for other community purposes before being acquired by Barnsley Theatre Trust in 1998. We opened as The Lamproom Theatre in 1999 and have since become known locally as “The People’s Theatre.” We operate primarily as an intimate theatre rather than a conventional conference or events centre. Our main auditorium contains 187 fixed, raked seats, providing good sightlines and a relatively close relationship between the audience and stage. We host an extensive programme including plays, musicals, comedy, dance, opera, music and family pantomimes. We also provide supporting facilities that make us useful for performances, rehearsals, workshops and smaller community events. These include three large dressing rooms, an upright piano, theatre technical facilities and a licensed bar. Four wheelchair positions are available in our auditorium, with designated disabled parking spaces directly opposite in Westgate Car Park. We are less than ten minutes' walk from Barnsley Interchange, while public parking is available directly opposite the theatre. We therefore offer good town-centre accessibility despite not having a dedicated large private car park.
