Arbeia Roman Fort is a major Roman archaeological site overlooking the mouth of the River Tyne in South Shields. The fort was established around AD 160 and became an important military and supply base serving the Roman frontier. Today, the site forms part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site and is managed as a museum and heritage attraction. The site combines preserved archaeological remains with reconstructed Roman buildings, including a reconstructed West Gate, a Roman house and a granary. These features make Arbeia particularly distinctive as an event setting because organisers can use an authentic archaeological landscape and reconstructed Roman architecture as the backdrop for educational, cultural and themed activities. The museum contains archaeological finds discovered at the fort and surrounding area, while the outdoor site provides substantial open space. Events at Arbeia are consequently more closely associated with heritage, education, community activities, family events, demonstrations, historical interpretation and cultural programming than conventional weddings or corporate conferences.
