Life Science Centre is a distinctive science and events venue located in Times Square in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. As part of the wider International Centre for Life, it combines a science visitor attraction with flexible indoor and outdoor spaces that can be hired for corporate, private, educational and public events. Its central Newcastle location, close to Newcastle Central Station and Metro, makes it particularly accessible for delegates travelling from across the North East and the wider UK. The venue offers a range of unusual event environments, including the flexible Scotswood Suite, Planetarium, Space Zone and Times Square Café Bar. The Planetarium provides a 71-seat immersive setting with 360-degree visuals and surround sound, while the Space Zone provides an interactive environment surrounded by science and space exhibits. The Scotswood Suite is approximately 350 square metres and can be adapted for conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs, training sessions and bespoke installations. Outdoor options are also available through Times Square, while Life's real-ice outdoor rink provides a distinctive seasonal event experience. Catering, technical support, accessibility facilities, Wi-Fi, parking options and on-site hospitality further strengthen its suitability for events. Overall, Life Science Centre is particularly attractive to organisers seeking a non-traditional, educational and visually memorable event venue rather than a conventional hotel conference space.
The Scotswood Suite is Life's principal large-format function and exhibition space. It provides approximately 350 m² of flexible floor space with a 5.3 m ceiling, two bar areas, private entrance and reception, dedicated parking and on-site facilities. It can accommodate conferences, training, trade fairs, evening events, exhibitions, installations and bespoke experiences.
The Planetarium is one of Life's most distinctive event spaces, offering 360-degree immersive visuals and surround sound. It is particularly suitable for presentations, talks, screenings, immersive entertainment, educational events and unusual corporate experiences. Its relatively intimate 71-seat configuration makes it more appropriate for focused audiences than large conferences.
Space Zone provides an unconventional networking and reception environment surrounded by interactive exhibits relating to space and the universe. Life specifically promotes it as a setting where guests can enjoy drinks and network among interactive exhibits. It is therefore particularly suitable for receptions, networking, informal corporate events and science/technology-themed functions.
Times Square Café Bar is a contemporary hospitality space positioned at the front of Life Science Centre. It can be used for networking events, drinks receptions and informal gatherings. Its location overlooking Times Square gives it a more conventional social atmosphere than some of Life's exhibition-based spaces, while retaining the venue's central-city accessibility.
Times Square is one of Newcastle city centre's larger outdoor spaces available for hire. Organisers can potentially install temporary structures, canopies or marquees, making it appropriate for outdoor exhibitions, product launches, public-facing activities and temporary events. Its position immediately outside Life also allows organisers to combine outdoor programming with indoor spaces.
Life's outdoor real-ice rink is located in Times Square and forms part of Newcastle's seasonal Christmas programme. It is available for group parties and exclusive hire for larger groups. This is a particularly distinctive option for festive events, team activities and Christmas parties. The rink is scheduled to reopen on 7 November 2026 for the 2026–27 season.
