Halifax Playhouse provides a distinctive Grade II listed setting on King Cross Street in Halifax, where we welcome audiences, performers and community groups throughout the year. Our building has a long theatrical history, having originally been built as a Methodist chapel in 1836 before becoming our theatre. We operate as an independent venue owned and run by the Halifax Thespians, presenting a varied programme of productions and events. Our facilities include a 239-seat Main Auditorium and an intimate Studio space within our Playhouse Bar area. We host our own theatrical productions while also providing a home for visiting amateur musical theatre groups and professional productions. Our programme can include plays, musicals, live entertainment, tribute performances, family productions, pantomimes and rehearsed readings. We also provide accessible facilities, including ramped access, wheelchair spaces, an accessible WC and an infrared hearing loop, helping us make our theatre welcoming to a broad range of visitors and performers.
Our Main Auditorium provides the principal performance space at Halifax Playhouse, accommodating approximately 239 guests. We use this traditional theatre setting for plays, musicals, professional productions and visiting performances.
Our Bar Studio provides a smaller, more intimate performance environment of approximately 46–50 seats. We use this flexible space for productions, rehearsed readings and smaller-scale theatrical events.
Our Playhouse Bar provides a welcoming social space for visitors attending performances. We serve refreshments around shows and offer guests a comfortable place to meet before performances and during intervals.
