The Word, National Centre for the Written Word is a state-of-the-art cultural and community venue located at 45 Market Place in the heart of South Shields. Opened in 2016, the building was developed by South Tyneside Council as a modern library and cultural centre designed around books, creativity, technology and community activity. The circular building contains extensive library facilities alongside exhibition areas, digital-learning facilities, creative spaces, an immersive storytelling area, café and other public amenities. Although primarily a library and cultural centre, The Word also operates as a hireable events and meeting venue. Its official room-hire service specifically promotes the building for meetings, corporate events, training sessions, workshops and conferences. The venue offers three specifically advertised meeting/event rooms: The Round, Charles Dickens Room and Catherine Cookson Room. Additional spaces, including StoryWorld and OpenZone, may also be available for hire on request. The building is particularly distinctive because event organisers can combine conventional meeting facilities with creative and technology-focused spaces. Facilities include presentation screens, built-in sound systems, microphones and interactive touchscreens. The Word also houses a FabLab, exhibition facilities, digital-learning areas, café and rooftop terrace. Its central Market Place location makes it a useful option for organisations seeking a modern civic venue rather than a traditional hotel or conference centre.
