Star & Shadow Cinema

We are Star & Shadow Cinema, a completely volunteer-run DIY arts, cinema, music and community space in Newcastle upon Tyne. We operate as a cooperative and provide an alternative setting for independent and grassroots culture, bringing together film, live music, community activities, workshops, talks and other creative events. Our building includes an 80-seat cinema, a 200-capacity music and event venue, café, library, gallery, dark room, print room, garden, workshop, kitchen and meeting room. We provide professional projection, sound and lighting equipment, alongside modular staging that can be adapted to different events. Our venue is fully accessible, with level access throughout, accessible toilets and a Changing Places facility. We welcome enquiries for suitable screenings, gigs, exhibitions, meetings, workshops, conferences, training sessions and community events. Our programming is shaped by our members and volunteers, and we aim to support independent artists, community groups and grassroots projects. We also offer hire options for organisations and individuals whose events fit our community-focused approach.
