The Maltings Theatre & Cinema

he Maltings Theatre & Cinema is a major cultural venue in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, operated by The Maltings (Berwick) Trust. The original Eastern Lane building opened in 1990 after being developed on the site of a former nineteenth-century maltings. It became an important cultural hub for North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, presenting theatre, dance, music, comedy, cinema, community productions, exhibitions and educational activities. The venue's historic configuration included a 314-seat Main House Theatre and the smaller Henry Travers Studio, alongside theatre/bar and supporting facilities. It was therefore capable of accommodating both larger performances and smaller workshops, rehearsals, meetings and community activities. The Eastern Lane building is currently closed for a major redevelopment. The project is designed to transform the site into a modern multi-purpose cultural and entertainment complex, including a 400-seat main theatre and two cinema screens. The expected reopening is 2028. During the redevelopment, The Maltings continues its cultural programme through alternative locations around Berwick. These include the Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks, Granary Gallery, Hide Hill and other temporary locations.
